Committee History: The Town Lakes Committee for Winchester was started in April of 2006.
A town board resolution was passed for the creation of this committee and with the help of Ted Ritter, Vilas County AIS Coordinator, we had our first official meeting. The committee was formed under the same format, supplied by Ted, that many Town Lakes Committees have used (click HERE for committee operating guidelines).
All members agreed that this provided a sound definition of what the town could expect from the committee. Most importantly, what the property owners would expect from a committee representing their best interests.
As a new committee our goal for this first year was to establish a group of residents that would represent the lakes that fall in our township. Our primary goal was to form a working committee that were concerned with preservation and enhancing the water quality of our lakes, adopt plans for the prevention of Invasive Species and review what options our committee has for implementing our goals.
To date we have 8 of our lakes represented with one or two members for each lake. Like many small townships we have worked hard to build a solid committee with people that will support what is expected of a committee of this nature.
Having achieved the above, our next mission was to evaluate what we can do best with minimal funds and make the most impact for prevention of Invasive Species. We adopted a plan to review all boat landings in the area and formulate a sign design that would be aesthetically acceptable, informative, provide space for lake, DNR, township and most importantly AIS.
A number of people have contributed to a design that we feel meets the above criteria. Our next step in the process is to establish a cost and work towards obtaining a grant.
We realize that there are many concerns from residents regarding safety, traffic and enjoyment of the lakes we live on. Keeping them clean, peaceful and providing a Northwoods environment for the animals and birds that reside here as well. We have many projects to work on in the future and will continue to community minded goals.
