Committee History
St. Germain's Town Lakes Committee was the first of its kind to be formed in Vilas County. It was deemed necessary by the town board following the realization in 2002 that Little Saint Germain Lake would be engaged in a very expensive and long term battle against two invasive aquatic plants, Curly-leaf pondweed and Eurasian water-milfoil. The risk of these plants spreading to other town lakes was real. The objective of the committee was to bring representatives of the primary town lakes together to undertake invasive species prevention and management efforts at the town level rather than leaving each lake organization to deal with the issue on its own. By the committee functioning as an extension of town government, it would have better access to grant funding and its efforts would be more likely supported by the town board than if it was not a standing advisor committee of the board.

Committee Structure
Voting members consist of two representatives from each of the five lake organizations in the town. The five organizations represent eight lakes. Each lake organization has the option of naming one alternate voting member if they wish, but only two votes per lake organization are allowed. Voting members are assigned by their respective lake organizations and serve offsetting two year terms to assure continuity of representation on the committee. There is also one "at large" seat on the committee. Six voting members with a limit of two per lake organization are needed for a quourm. An elected town board member serves as the liason between the committee and the town board.
